A Glimpse of What Might Be: Browsing 2,000 images from World War One

We are extremely grateful to support for our project from Zegami, an image-search/retrieval development company in Oxford. Using 2,000 images taken from our 2008 Great War Archive initiative they have mocked up a demo site allowing you to browse and filter the collection to see what might be possible. If you wish to see more of this, then please support us in our campaign by donating or encouraging others to donate:

CHANCE TO Win another £270 worth of Books and Help Oxford University Save Items from World War One!

'Lest We Forget' led by Oxford University is a project to run a mass-digitization initiative of publicly-held material from the First World War. In addition to our Tolkien-related prizes (below), we are also delighted to announce that we have over £270 worth of WW1 books thanks to the kind support of Pen & Sword Books, Galileo Publishers, and Jackie Storer.

To sponsor us and enter the prize draws select 'Sponsor' above right (pay by credit/debit card) or select a pledge amount to the right (in £ sterling).

If you sponsor us by pledging £1 or more (or equivalent), you will automatically be entered into draw to win:

One of five signed copies of Richard van Emden's brand new book, The Road to Passchendaele (Pen & Sword, 2017: RRP £25)

One of five copies of James Bentley's Some Corner of a Foreign Field (illustrated anthology of WW1 poetry) (Galileo Publishing, 2014: RRP £14.99)

One of five copies of Jackie Storer's Hidden Stories of the First World War (British Library, 2014: RRP £17.99)

You will also be entered into a draw to win one of five copies signed by John Garth of his Tolkien and the Great War (pbk, HarperCollins, 2011 - RRP: £9.99; $12.00; €11.99).

In addition to these chances of winning, perhaps more importantly you may also be helping to save and preserve important objects from the First World War which are in danger of being lost on a daily basis.

We reserve the right to not complete the draw if we do not raise our initial fund-raising target.

You do not have to make a pledge to enter the competitions.

CHANCE TO Win over £1,000/$1,000 worth of Tolkien Books and Help Oxford University Save Items from World War One!

'Lest We Forget' led by Oxford University is a project to run a mass-digitization initiative of publicly-held material from the First World War and as is well known the experiences J. R. R. Tolkien underwent in 1916 in the Battle of the Somme had a profound effect on him and his writing. To assist with our major crowd-funding appeal we have been generously supported by Tolkien scholars and publishers, allowing us to present a prize draw opportunity to win three major publications amounting to over £1,000. Our sincerest thanks go to John Garth, Wiley/Blackwells, and Routledge for their help here.

To sponsor us and enter the prize draws select 'Sponsor' above right (pay by credit/debit card) or select a pledge amount to the right (in £ sterling).

If you sponsor us by pledging £1 or more (or equivalent) you will be entered into a draw to win one of five copies signed by John Garth of hisTolkien and the Great War (pbk, HarperCollins, 2011 - RRP: £9.99; $12.00; €11.99).

To enter into a draw to win one of three copies of A Companion to J. R. R. Tolkien (hbk, Wiley/Blackwells, 2014) signed by the editor (RRP: £125; $140; €150) we would ask you to sponsor us for £5 (or equivalent) or more.

Finally, to enter into a draw to win the forthcoming 4-volume J. R. R. Tolkien: Critical Assessments of Major Writers (hbk, Routledge, due 2017) signed by the editor ( RRP: £900; $1,180; €930 ) - we have a single copy of this to give away - we would ask you to sponsor us by pledging £10 or more (or equivalent).

In addition to these chances of winning, perhaps more importantly you may also be helping to save and preserve important objects from the First World War which are in danger of being lost on a daily basis.

BBC News and Other Publicity

'Lest We Forget' is beginning to attract attention in the media, in spite of the blanket coverage of the election. BBC Oxford posted this online after running a story on their drive time. We also hope to be appearing on BBC South Today, and once the election finishes in the nationals. Many thanks for all the help on this!

6/6

Today our Thunderclap campaign was launched to over 250,000 social media users to tell them about our project. We now need to encourage people to donate money to the cause so please do help if you can in encouraging friends/colleagues to pledge a small amount (even if it is only a few pounds). To see how successful you are in this you can also become a 'helper' on the site which allows you to see how many people have joined and donated due to your help.

many thanks again,

Stuart Lee

LaunchED and 'Become a Helper'

Today, 5th June, we went live on our crowd-funding campaign. Please do help to spread the word and point people to the site and also 'Become a helper' (see the button on the right hand of the screen). This will allow you to see how successful your assistance has been in terms of follow-up donations and we will offer a bottle of champagne or Amazon token for £30 to the top 'helper' (who has had the most follow-up donations) when the campaign finishes by way of a small thank you!
